DIRECTIONS: North Main St. in North Canton is Cleveland Av. in Canton and north of North Canton.  Chicken Manor is on west side of street just a little south of th new Fisher's Market.

From I-77 exit at Akron Canton Airport. Go south to Mount Pleasant Rd, then east on Mount Pleasant to Cleveland Ave., then souoth to Chicken Manor.  (Not : Traffic on Portage Ave east of I-77 exit is horrendous.

MINUTES: CHAPTER 21 MEETING
June 3, 2006 


The regular quarterly meeting of QCWA, Chapter 21, Canton, Ohio, was held on  June 3, 2006, following dinner at the Das Dutch Restaurant, Dalton, Ohio.  President Kay McCune W8LNK presided for a business meeting.  David Glass W8UKQ, secretary, kept the minutes.  There were 11 members and 11
guests present. 

This meeting was rescheduled to avoid conflicts with Dayton, Mother's Day, and Memorial Day.

Secretary David Glass reported that the minutes were published in the newsletter and reported the treasury balance.  Comments from members were noted. 

President McCune presented the 65 years anniversary certificate to Jack Bennett W8WEN.  A Century Club certificate was awarded to Joseph Vignos W1FEZ.

The program was presented by Mel Vye W8MV about his DXpedition to Peter 1 Island last February with a large group of hams.  He used a PowerPoint
presentation for pictures of the trip.  They used the call 3Y0X.  You may go to www.peterone.com to find the whole story.

Prizes were awarded.  The free dinner was won  by Myron Koyle W8FNM.  The50-50 drawing was  won by Addie Koyle.  Guests' prizes were won by Akemi
Vignos, Pat Vignos, and Martha Bennett.

The next regular meeting will be August 19.

1966,  August 20:   16th meeting of the Chapter 21 at Atwood Lodge.  48 present.  Membership in the chapter was 58.

1976,  August 14:   The Lakeshore Restaurant, Meyers Lake.  36 in attendance.  President Whitey Beechy W8LVW had become SK.  National dues
will be increased to $14 for 3 years.  W8EUK will be operating YN1BN in September.

1986,  August 16:   Zoar Tavern, Zoar, Ohio with 57 present.  Program by Welton Stein WA8JLM had pictures of Mt. St. Helens eruption.

1996,  August 17:   Scheduled for Atwood Lake Lodge.  CANCELLED -- Lack of reservations.

 
QCWA NEWS

QCWA at Dayton.  Haven't found any report on 2006 QCWA attendance or recruiting activity.  In 2005, 185 members signed in at the QCWA booth.  46 new members signed up and 31 members renewed.

Dayton Hamvention 2006 attendance was 20,234 a slight decrease from 2005 whose official tally was20,411 and was 19,869 in 2004.

Keith Chamber W8VAN 's wife Mary Ruth has  reported that Keith had fallen in mid April and broken his hip and leg. Keith is in a nursing home near home and they have not set the bones yet. Latest address for Keith is:

"Although he wasn't one of us" youngsters QCWA Founding Member #13, Frank Lester  W4AMJ, has joined th Silent Keys.  Frank was born in January 1907 and earned his first Amateur Radio license in 1924 or 1925.  At the initial organizational meeting, it was Frank (then W2AMJ)  who suggested the name Quarter Century Wireless Association.  He was recently awarded hi QCWA 80 year pin.  It is reported that there is still one Founding Member left. A Memorial articl will m0st likely be in the Fall QCWA Journal. (SK notice is from QCWA web site)

MINUTES: CHAPTER 21 MEETING
 February 18, 2006 

The regular quarterly meeting of QCWA, Chapter 21, Canton, Ohio, was held on February 18, 2006, following dinner at the Hometown Buffet, Canton,
Ohio. President Kay McCune W8LNK presided for a business meeting. There were members and guests present. Four couples were in Florida, and one member, Mel Vye W8MV, was on Peter One Island, DXpedition. A guest of Ed and Doris Clinger, Helen Carlson, was introduced.

It was noted that John Underwood, W8GAC, QCWA #15215 died Monday January 23, 2006, in Mercy Medical Center, after a brief battle with cancer. He was 77. John was first licensed in 1955 and joined QCWA Chapter 21 in 1981.  John was presented the QCWA 50th Anniversary and the 50th Continuous Licensing and the Century Club at the MARC Hamfest last October.  "The telephone man" as he was known retired from Ohio Bell after 32 years of service.. He was an active member of the TUSCO Amateur Radio Club for50 years, the Old Town Valley Fliers, the Ohio Bell Pioneer Club, and the Dennison Eagles.

President McCune presented the 50 years continuous licensing and the 50 years anniversary certificates to Dennis Moriarty K8AGB. The 55 years anniversary certificates were presented to Phil Gizzi W8IIV and Kay McCune W8LNK. A Century Club certificate was awarded to J. Kelly Heinbuch W8MO, who was unable to attend the meeting. Ed Clinger WA8DRT accepted the award and will take it to Kelly.

Dennis Moriarty K8AGB presented the program. He played an audio tape of an interview of Stu Wilson W8ADQ on WHBC in 1965. It was the occasion of the radio station's 40th anniversary. The interviewers were Bob Krahling and Bill Karenbauer.

Prizes were awarded. It was voted to hold the next meeting on Saturday,
June 3. Time and place TBA.

1966, May 21: Atwood Lake Lodge. 50 attended. Gene Arnold W8YAB and XYL, Florence, showed movies of their trip to New England.

1976, May 15: Buckeye Hotel in Uhrichsville. 38 attended. Paul Kindy W8UKT told of the emergency work being done by Florida hams. Bill Parks
K8JZN described the Weather-Watch Program. The chapter roster had 79 on the mailing list.

1986, May 17: Lu Minko's Restaurant. 44 attended. Keith Chambers W8SSA (also WQ8H, now W8VAN) presented a video program on AEP's huge dragline shovel, "Big Muskie."

1996, May 18: Chalet in the Valley. 24 attended. Several members were in Dayton for the Hamvention which had changed its date to this weekend.  A letter was received from Mel Vye W8MV who was completing an assignment in China teaching and setting up an amateur radio station BY2QLY. Nelson
W8EAR and Polly Caley described their experiences attending Elderhostel programs.

QCWA ELECTION

By now ballots for QCWA Candidates for 2006 should be in your hands. Ballots must reach the tellers by the end of the day July 31, 2006.

Biographical information for each candidate can be found in th Spring issue of th Journal.

The Secretary and Treasurer incumbents are unopposed and do not appear on the ballot due to a by-law change in 2005.  It is interesting to note that while there are eight Directors to be voted on, only two Directors are running for reelection.

Jim Foltz  W8SWE was recently in a vehicle accident and has returned home from the hospital. Reports are that he is in high spirits and hopes to be out and around again shortly.

DIRECTIONS: From North. Take I-77 Belden Village Exit. Turn right on Everhard Rd. Go west past two traffic lights to Plaza on left with TJ Maxx. Restaurant is in last building.
 From South. Take I-77 Belden Village exit onto Belden Village Street. Go to 3rd traffic light at Everhard Rd.  Turn left on Everhard and go to Plaza on Left with TJ Maxx. (If you know the BV area, you can turn left at Dressler Rd. and Plaza is on right as you go south.)

PROGRAM:  Dennis Moriarty K8AGB, who has been a member of Chapter 21 for 17 years, will tell us about "Early Broadcast Radio in Canton, Ohio." He will play an "off the  air" tape of an interview with Stew Walker W8ADQ on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of WHBC in 1965. You wil recognize the voices of the announcers, Bob K and Bob K. (Ed note: Can't remember how to spell their names!)

Mel Vye W8MV kept busy presenting talks on the upcoming Dxpedition as wll as some past ones.
Most recently he spoke at the Canton Amateur Radio Club's Annual Awards Banquet.

Secretary David Glass reported that the minutes were published in the newsletter and reported the treasury balance.  Comments from members were noted.

President McCune presented the 55 years anniversary certificate to Andy Hogue W8DIR.

An election was held to fill the vacancy of Director, formerly held by Mel Vye W8MV.  The nomination committee nominated Phil Gizzi W8IIV.  Nominations from the floor were then opened.  As the train rounded the bend, a motion to close nominations was made and approved.  As it as it passed into the distance, a motion  for the secretary to cast the unanimous ballot was made and approved.  Phil Gizzi W8IIV was elected director for a two year term.

Mel Vye W8MV, our resident DXpeditioner, described the Dxpedition he and a group will be making next February to Peter One Island.  It will be the most extensive and expensive DXpedition/ in ham history.  More information can be found at  http://www.peterone.com

Nelson Caley W8EAR introduced Mike Harlan NG9D and his XYL who presented a program about GPS and APRS.  GPS is a satellite navigation system that has many uses.

Awards were made.  The free member dinner was won by Nelson Caley W8EAR.  Guests' prizes were won by Polly Caley, Virginia Domer and Judy Moriarty.

1966,  February 12  Brown Derby, Canton, Ohio.
48 attended. Rob Roy W8HR showed slides of his1965 visit to VE1 2 and 3 land.
 
1976  February 21: Lakreshore Restaurant, Canton, Ohioi.  28 attended. No program notes found.  Several members were outof town in Florida or Illinois.

1986, February 15: Massillon Women's Club, Massillon, Ohio. 37 attended.  Henry W8OYV described the fine old house.  The entertainment was by a choral group from Washington High School.

1996, February  Otterbein United Methodist Church.
 22 attended.  The scheduled speaker was unable to come.  A question was asked of everyone, "how did you happen to become a ham?"  The question went arouond the room as Hams recalled memories.

Kelly Heinbuch W8MO.  Kelly recently  fractured his hip and that it has been surgicaly repaired.  He is recuperating in the Sunset Nursing Home in Millersburg , OH. Phone # is 330-674-0015.

Myron Koyle W8FNM has had his activity severly curtailed for the past six months.  He underwent a  knee replacemnt operation on August 1. Myron has returned home and is doing therapy.

Myron's XYL Adelaine has joined Myron on the Sunshine Report, recovering from a broken leg, resulting from a fall.

Keith Chambers W8VAN.   Haven't  heard from Keith.  He was recovering from Open heart Surgery performed in May.

PROGRAM: Mike Harlan NG8D will be presenting a program on GPS (Global Positioning System) and APRS (Automatic Position Reporting System.) GPS  is a satellite navigation sysem that is nearly standard in all new cars and has many other applications. APRS is a packet based system used by amateur radio ops for tracking and digital communications.                                                     

The November meeting is considered the Annual Meeting of Chapter 21.  This year, an election for one director will be conducted. The nominating committee is submitting W8IIV Phil Gizzi for the position.  Phil has served in several positions in the past, including President.  Nominations from the floor will also be accepted.

MINUTES: CHAPTER 21 MEETING

AUGUST 20, 2005 
The regular quarterly meeting of QCWA, Chapter 21, Canton, Ohio, was held on August 20, 2005, following dinner at the Country Diner, Alliance,Ohio. President Kay McCune W8LNK presided for a business meeting. David Glass W8UKQ, secretary, kept the minutes. There were 12 members and 10 guests present.

Secretary David Glass reported that the minutes were published in the newsletter and reported on the treasury balance. Comments from members were noted by the president.

President McCune presented the 50 years anniversary and continuouslicensing certificates to Perry Ballinger W8AU..

For the program Nelson Caley introduced our member, Perry Ballinger W8AU, who described in detail with a video presentation his several weeks aboard the LST 325 during its tour of the East Coast from Mobile, AL to Boston, MA. He was the radio officer with many duties. During Field Day he signed as WW2LST/MM 1CDX. DX was used because they were outside the
coastal limit. They were in Boston when the USS Constitution did its annual turn around.

Dennis Moriarty reported that there will be a Stan and Ollie Special Event on October 1st.
The free dinner was won by Jack Bennett W8WEN
Guests' prizes were won by Polly Caley, Mary Frey and Judy Moriarty.  Martha Bennett won the 50-50 drawing.

1965,  November 13:  Padulas Inn, Massillon.  55 members and guests attended.  Elections:  President:  W. L. Beechy W8LVW;  VP  C. J. Murray W8ZA;  Sec'y.:  Carmello Cicerello; Trustees: Rob Roy W8HR, and Earl Reichman W8NBK.  Wilson Weckel W8AL had received his 50 years award.

1975, November 1::  American Legion Lounge, Massillon.  41 attended. Phil Gizzi W8IIV, Chief with the FAA at Canton Akron Airport, "gave a most enlightening talk on the duties of an Airport Controller."  He, also, discussed his model train collection.  New officers were:  President,
Willard Beechy W8LVW; VP Roy Burckhart  W8CZA; Sec'y., Henry McLaughlin W8OYV; Trustees:  Leonard Reigler W8DNC and Ralph Schoener W8TPS,

1985, November 16:   Golden Tree, Wales Road, Massillon. 44 attended.  Jim Pickerill, local FBI agent in charge, gave a very interesting talk on the FBI and the operations of the department which changed since the days of
J. Edgar Hoover.


1995, November 11:  Kurt's Inn, between Canton and Massillon.  54 were present.  Dave Immel KE4EW discussed the activities of missionaries in New Guinea and described the island, living conditions, and the people. Nelson Caley W8EAR was elected to the post of chapter director.

SUNSHINE REPORT

Myron has returned home after a two week stay at Aultman Rehab facility on Woodlawn Ave and is doing Therapy.

Dave Glass W8UKQ our Chapter's secretary-treasurer, has returned home some time ago and has continued  treatment locally.

Phil Gizzi W8IIV successfully underwent  surgery in January and is continuing treatmant locally.

The regular quarterly meeting of QCWA, Chapter 21, Canton, Ohio, was held on  May 14, 2005, following dinner at Das Dutch Kitchen, Dalton, OH  President Kay McCune W8LNK presided for a business meeting.  David Glass W8UKQ, secretary, kept the minutes.  There were 10 members and 8 guests present.

Secretary David Glass reported that the minutes were published in the Newsletter and that the treasury balance is $209.  Comments from members were noted by the president.

President McCune suggested that a vote be taken regarding meeting times.  After a short discussion it was moved by Nelson Caley W8EAR, seconded by Denny Frey K8NIB, to leave the times as they are at the discretion of the President.  Motion approved.

President McCune presented the 65 years anniversary certificate to Joe Vignos W1FEZ.

For the program Nelson Caley introduced Tammy Seikel who described with slides the operation and opportunities of the Wilderness Center near Wilmot, Ohio.  Many programs and trails for viewing wildlife are available.
 
Awards were made.  The free dinner was won  by Denny Frey K8NIB.  Guests' prizes were won by Sharon Glass, Pat Vignos, and Ruth Heinbuch.
