The August 14th, 2010 Chapter 21 meeting was held at W8MV,  Mel Vye's QTH and had a great time.
 When 14 had arrived,
Mel took us on a lovely short tour of the lakes in his pontoon boat

Since the prediction was for rain later in the afternoon, so we moved the 'picnic' inside,  The "spread" included baked chicken, ravioli, green beans, a vegi tray and a variety of desserts plus a choice of drinks.  We had 8 members and 8 guests  including a Korean Akron U.student.

After stuffing ourselves (with plenty left over), President Ed Clinger called the meeting to order, as several of the wives took off to the next room.  Judy McCune gave the treasurer's report.  We voted to send $100 to the QCWA scholarship fund, in memory of our latest 4 silent keys, Kelly Heinbuch W8MO, Norman Russell W8GBH, Phillip Gizzi W8IIV, and John Edel K8LBZ.

September 1, 2010 to August 31, 2011 dues are due and everyone there got paid up by giving $5.00.  Ed announced that Chapter 21 elections would be held at our November meeting.  We are looking for a new vice president since Mel Vye will be moving up to President this time.  Secretary-Treasurer Judy and Feedline Editor Joe are looking for replacements also, or at least helpers.  We will also be voting on a new director.  Please call Joe Vignos W1FEZ or Ed Clinger WA8DRT if you are willing to help.

Since the storm didn't materialize, several went on another boat ride.

Stay tuned for the announcement of where our next meeting will be held.

Near record attendance for our Saturday morning breakfast at Perkins

FEBRUARY MEETING

On February 20th at noon Chapter 21 met for a nice buffet at Hometown Buffet in Jackson township. We had 7 members and 7 guests in attendance. It was especially nice to see Les W8TJF and Karen Myers and Sharon Glass at our meeting. President, Ed Clinger W8DRT, opened the meeting with a welcome.

After we stuffed ourselves, Dennis Moriarty K8AGB gave us a Power Point slide show of his trip to Cape Cod to see where Marconi set up and transmitted across the Atlantic ocean, to Europe and to ARRL headquarters and the W1AW station. He has some excellent pictures of the old stations and the new ones as well. He was very impressed by the friendliness of all he met.

After the program we had a short meeting where Judy N8AIM gave the treasurer’s report, and reported on our members.

We passed around cards to Phil W8IIV, who was receiving Hospice and had his sons with him these last weeks, and John K8LBZ, who was operated on for colon cancer on February 17th and was still in intensive care. John Linton W8DKI sent his best wishes to the group. Ray Rauvola won $ 6.00 in the fifty-fifty drawing.

Our next meeting will be in May, and in August, Mel W8MV has invited us to his home on the Portage Lakes.

+ International: Oldest National Amateur Radio Society Marks 100th Anniversary

The Wireless Institute of Australia will celebrate 100 years in 2010.

In 2010, the Wireless Institute of Australia (WIA) -- the oldest national Amateur Radio society -- will celebrate its 100th anniversary. On March 11, 1910, the WIA had its beginnings when a group of wireless pioneers gathered at the Hotel Australia, Martin Place in Sydney. These early hams wanted to protect their interests and rights against what they considered to be harsh treatment by authorities -- and a high license fee. Chairman of the founding meeting, George Taylor, proposed "the formation of an institution amongst experimenters and enthusiasts in wireless for their mutual benefit." From that meeting, the Institute of Wireless Telegraphy of Australia -- later, the WIA -- was formed. Since its founding, the WIA has continued to protect and enhance the privileges of radio amateurs and to promote Amateur Radio in Australia and beyond. Click here for more information on the WIA's centennial celebration.

+++ We Keep Growing and Growing +++

New amateur licenses seem to be overcoming the blip in licensing figures brought on by the onset of the 10-year license. There are
about 14,000 more licensees now than a year ago.

Last year's increase brings the number of ham licensees in the US to over 674,000. This total is just under the all-time high for US
licensees. If we add another 14,000 this year, we will have exceeded the all-time high for ham licensees.

Therefore, current facts do not support the contention being spread by many amateurs that ham radio is a dying avocation. We may not be in a
teen-age growth spurt, but we are growing. Don't count Amateur radio out.

FCC LOOKS TO RAISE VANITY CALL SIGN FEES FOR SECOND CONSECUTIVE YEAR

The FCC released a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking and Order (NPRM) on May 14 seeking to raise fees for Amateur Radio vanity call signs
<http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/FCC-08-126A1.pdf. Currently, a vanity call sign costs $12.30 and is good for 10 years; the
new fee, if the FCC plan goes through, will go up to $13.40 for 10 years, an increase of $1.10. The FCC is authorized by the Communications
Act of 1934 (as amended) to collect vanity call sign fees to recover the costs associated with that program. The vanity call sign regulatory fee
is payable not only when applying for a new vanity call sign, but also upon renewing a vanity call sign for a new term. Instructions on how to
comment on this NPRM are available on the FCC Web site http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/howtocomment.html>.
The vanity call sign regulatory fee is payable not only when applying for a new vanity call sign, but also upon renewing a vanity call signfor a new term. The first vanity call sign licenses issued under the current Amateur Radio vanity call sign program that began in 1996 cameup for renewal three years ago.
Those holding vanity call signs issued prior to 1996 are exempt from having to pay the vanity call sign regulatory fee at renewal, however.
That's because Congress did not authorize the FCC to collect regulatory fees until 1993. Such "heritage" vanity call sign holders do not appear
as vanity licensees in the FCC Amateur Radio database.

Amateur Radio licensees may file for renewal only within 90 days of their license expiration date. All radio amateurs must have an FCC
Registration Number (FRN) before filing any application with the Commission. Applicants can obtain an FRN by going to the ULS
<http://wireless.fcc.gov/uls/> and clicking on the "New Users Register" link. You must supply your Social Security Number to obtain an FRN.

QCWA CHAPTER 21 NET

Net became dormant im Spring of 2005.  Lack of interest, timing of net on Thursday evening and lack of activity of 145.11 repeater have been cited for the demise. Attempts to start Net up again have been futile!  Any suggestions would be highly appreciated. Contact one of the Chapter officers or directors.
