QCWA CHAPTER 21 FEBRUARY MEETING

February 16th at noon Chapter 21 met for a nice buffet at Hometown Buffet in Jackson township.  we had 11 members and 7 guests.  Ed Clinger opened the meeting with a welcome and round of introductions.  He especially welcomed our newest member, Julius Erdos WD8XD and our president, Nelson W8EAR and wife Polly who surprised us by traveling all the way from Florida just so he could attend our meeting.   Polly was found to have a tumor in her lung and has since had further checks and is seeing a surgeon about taking it out.  They could not fine any signs of cancer outside the tumor, and decided to take out the tumor rather than doing a biopsy on it.

Dennis Moriarty K8AGB showed us a tape of an old 'Hazel' sitcom where there is a lot of static on the TV, and it started about the same time as a boy up the street got his amateur radio working.  It turned out that it was a heating pad, not the radio that was causing all the trouble.  Dennis used the episode to talk about why the heating pad was the culprit, and also talk about other things that can cause interference on radios and TV's.

John Linton W8DKI sent his best wishes to the group.  Myron Koyle W8FNM was back in the hospital with an infection.

The Canton/Massillon Amateur Radio Clubs Offers Code Testing -- for Fun

The Canton & Massillon Amateur Radio VE team begins participating in a pilot study of an ARRL field code proficiency testing program administered by accredited Volunteer Examiners (VE's), in June. The first of the monthly sessions will be offered on June 16, 2007 at 9:00 AM. The location for the testing will be at the Massillon Senior Center, 39 Lincoln Way West, Massillon, Ohio. Morse code testing will be offered from 5-40 wpm in steps of 5 wpm. There is no charge to participate.

The pilot program is essentially an extension of the long-standing Code Proficiency program conducted over W1AW. It functions only in four municipal areas in the ARRL Great Lakes Division of Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio.

All area residents interested in demonstrating their ability to receive Morse code are invited to join in the testing. Test participants do not need to be Amateur Radio operators. The runs are in no way related to FCC examinations and do not provide FCC accreditation for code proficiency.

Successful candidates will demonstrate one minute of perfect copy of the transmitted text at one or more test speeds. Persons who achieve 1 minute of solid copy will receive a receipt that confirms their accomplishment.

For further information on Morse code testing runs, contact Gary Kline, WC8W (wc8w@arrl.net), or Perry Ballinger, W8AU (w8au@sssnet.com). All are welcome, NO PREREGISTRATIONS REQUIRED. You may be surprised to learn how easy it is to develop and demonstrate skills in using Morse code. You, too, can talk on the air with DX and others operations that use CW only.

QCWA CELEBRATES ITS SIXTIETH ANNIVERSARY!

The Quarter Century Wireless Association has a cake in the oven and the ice cream churn is a-churnin' in anticipation of celebrating its 60th Diamond Anniversary!

Time truly does fly! It was what seems like only yesterday that on November 14, 1947, during a 10-Meter roundtable QSO, the suggestion was made to form an association of ham radio operators that had been licensed for twenty-five years or more. The very next month, with that thought in mind, a group of hams met on Friday evening, December 5, 1947, in New York City. That evening, the Quarter Century Wireless Association (QCWA) was born.

In order to celebrate our Sixtieth Anniversary in grand style, the Quarter Century Wireless Association is pleased to announce a new, limited availability, operating Award to celebrate this momentous occasion known as the:

QCWA Sixty-Sixty Award
This Award is unique in that it represents the first Award of its type offered by the QCWA. In order to raise the awareness of and stimulate new Membership in the QCWA, the Award is available to both Members and non-Members alike. The basic requirements are simple: Make 60, two-way contacts with 60 different QCWA Members.

The QCWA Sixty-Sixty Award became available with its announcement at the 2007 Dayton Hamvention on May 18, 2007 by President John Johnston, W3BE. The final day for contacts is no later than 2400 UTC, June 30, 2008. All applications for the Award should be post marked no later than September 1, 2008.

The specific Eligibility Requirements are as follows:
1. The applicant must submit a list of 60 different two-way contacts with QCWA Members and their associated Membership numbers.

2. Two-way contacts may be made utilizing any RF mode of operation on any frequency authorized for amateur use to include the use of VHF/UHF repeaters.

3. Submitted log information should include the time (UTC), date of contact, call sign, QCWA Member's name membership number *.

4. The applicant should include with each application, a statement in his/her own words that the contacts are true and correct and were made in accordance with both the amateur regulatory requirements for his country of residence and the QCWA requirements as set forth for the Award.

5. There is a fee of $2.00 USD for applicants (Check, cash, or money order only. No credit cards or stamps are accepted.) Award certificates will be gratis to stations outside North America but donations to defray postage/handling will be gratefully accepted.

6. Applicants are requested to submit the requested items to:
    W2OD - Robert Buus
    8 Donner St.
    Holmdel, NJ 07733-2004 USA

7. Specific Award questions should be directed to the above address via Snail Mail or Email to: w2od@aol.com

* Find your membership number on the lable of your Journal or in the Membership Directory.

IT'S OFFICIAL!  MORSE CODE REQUIREMENT ENDS FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 23

Circle Friday, February 23, on your calendar. That's when the current 5 WPM Morse code requirement will officially disappear from the Amateur Radio Service Part 97 rules. Effective that date, applicants for a General or Amateur Extra class Amateur Radio license no longer will have to demonstrate proficiency in Morse code.

"The overall effect of this action is to further the public interest by encouraging individuals who are interested in communications technology or who are able to contribute to the advancement of the radio art, to become Amateur Radio operators; and eliminating a requirement that is now unnecessary and may discourage Amateur Service licensees from advancing their skills in the communications and technical phases of Amateur Radio," the FCC remarked in the Federal Register version of the "Morse code" R&O.

The League had asked the FCC to retain the 5 WPM for Amateur Extra class applicants, but the Commission held to its decision to eliminate the requirement across the board. The rules that appeared in the Federal Register constitute their official version
The new rules also mean that starting February 23 all Technician licensees, whether or not they've passed a Morse code examination, will have CW privileges on 80, 40 and 15 meters and CW, RTTY, data and SSB privileges on 10 meters. Once the new rules go into effect Technicians may begin using their new privileges without any further action.

An applicant holding a valid Certificate of Successful Completion of Examination (CSCE) for Element 3 (General) or Element 4 (Amateur Extra) credit may redeem it for an upgrade at a Volunteer Examiner Coordinator (VEC) exam session. A CSCE is good for 365 days from the date of issuance,
The ARRL has posted all relevant information on these important Part 97 rule revisions on its "FCC's Morse Code Report and Order WT Docket 05-235" Web Page.

WANTED: NEW QCWA MEMBERS.
Radio Amateurs licensed ANYTIME in 1983 will be eligible for membership on Jan.1 2008.
If you know any, please let  our Secretary know.

MORSE CODE EXPANDS!  Who sais CW is dead.  A new CW character for the @ symbol which is used in such things as e-mail addresses has been formally proposed.

To keep up with the times, however, the IARU proposed adding a new character--the commercial "at" or @ symbol--to permit sending e-mail addresses in Morse code. The draft new recommendation proposes using the letters A and C run together (.--.-.) to represent the @ symbol. (That's "dit dah dah dit dah dit")

+Morse "@" character official as of May 3, 2005

VANITY CALL FEES TO RISE

* Vanity call sign fee to rise: The FCC regulatory fee to obtain an Amateur Radio vanity call sign will rise from $16.30 to $20.80 on August 6th, 2004. The FCC announced the new fee in a Report and Order (R&O) in MD
Docket 04-73, "Assessment and Collection of Regulatory Fees for Fiscal Year 2004." The FCC says it anticipates 7800 applications for FY2004--2000 fewer than the previous fiscal year. The FCC expects revenue collected from the vanity call sign regulatory fees in FY2004 to rise by more than $2100. The R&O becomes effective 30 days after it's published in The Federal Register. ARRL will announce when the new, higher vanity fee becomes effective.  (From ARRL letter June 25, 2004)

NOVEMBER  MEETING MINUTES

MEETING, November 17, 2007

Our annual meeting was held at Giorgio’s Restaurant in Bolivar, Ohio.  Nine members and ten guests were present.  Chapter president Nelson Caley W8EAR presided.

Nelson noted that this has been a sad year for our chapter in that we had four Silent Keys: Dave Glass W8UKQ our Secretary-Treasurer, Kay McCune W8LNK our past president, Jack Bennett W8WEN, and Lee Covert KA8FTM.

On a happier note we’ve welcomed two new members:  Scott Mathews W8JT and Gary Osborn WA8ADA.

Myron Koyle W8FNM was at Manor Care at Belden Village.  Myron Kiefaber W8BML is receiving radiation therapy for bone cancer in his back.  He is at home and said to say Hi to all from him.  John Edel K8LBZ has headed south for the winter.

Judy McCune N8AIM gave the Treasurer’s report.  So far nineteen of our members have paid their dues through at least 2008.  Dues are still coming in. Election for one Director was held and Dennis Moriarty W8AGB was elected for a two-year term succeeding Phil Gizzi W8IIV whose term expired.

Ed Clinger WA8DRT introduced Melissa Howard, who talked about Pegasus Farm, where riders escape their braces, crutches and wheelchairs, replacing them with the gentle gait of well trained horses.  Pegasus was founded in July 1985 to maximize the potential of persons with disabilities.  Today 36 horses and ponies carry 190 riders aged from 3 to 73 to new levels of mobility and self-esteem.

A free meal was won by Denny Frye, and the 50-50 drawing was won by Doris Clinger. After the meeting, the group sang Happy Birthday to Nelson W8EAR and Joe W1FEZ whose birthdays were within the next few days. Our next quarterly meeting will be held at noon at HomeTown Buffet, Canton, Ohio on Saturday, February 16, 2008.

Respectfully submitted,
Judy McCune N8AIM

EDITORS NOTE    There is an incompatibility with Netscape and Microsoft Inernet "browsers". This document was made using Mozilla's  Composer. With Microsoft you may have to reduce text size on your VIEW option. So everything may not, and more probably will not, be in alignment! You may also find that different printers do strange  things to documents.
