QCWA Chapter 21 Minutes August 10, 2013

Our quarterly meeting was at W8MV Mel Vye's home at noon.  There were nine in attendance.  Mel and his wife Martha, President Les Myers        and  his wife Karen, Denny Moriarity K8AGB and his wife Lois, Judy McCune N8AIM, W1FEZ's wife Pat Vignos, and potential member
Dick Getz W8GJO.  We boarded Mel's pontoon boat and rode to Nicoletti's for a delicious lunch, and then after a lovely tour around the lakes, we retrurned to Mel's home for some great cantaloupe.  The weather was beautiful fluffy clouds sprinkled the sky, and a light cool breeze blew.

Due to the small attendance, no formal meeting was held.

QCWA CHAPTER 21
MAY 25, 2013 MEETING

President Les Myers, KK8K called the meeting to order at 6PM.   A round of introduction of the 24 members and guests was followed by dinner.   After dinner, QCWA Executive Administrator ) Ken Simpson, W8EK, presented  QCWA Chapter 21 with the QCWA  50-year certificate and Perry Ballinger, W8AU, with a certificate for his work on the restoration of and operation on the
LST 325.  Ken then gave a very good run down on the many changes that have been made in the administration and daily operations of QCWA.  Dennis Moriarty, K8AGB gave us a little
"Trip Down Memory Lane" recalling past events such as our Chapter21 hosting the QCWA National Convention, the 40th anniversary and the memories of names of the charter members and silent keys.
The next meeting will be on August 10, 2013 at Mel and Martha Vye's home on Portage Lakes.  The meeting was then adjourned.

(Unfortunately the restaurant did not give us a private room to accommodate our guest speaker's presentation and we shared a room with a birthday party.)

Changes in QCWA
By Ken Simpson, W8EK

Remember that song from years ago, "The Times, They are a Changing"? For QCWA the times really are changing. Many changes took place at the Board of Directors meeting in Reno on September 24. The changes introduced then have now reached fruition, but more subtle changes are yet to come.

At the board meeting, your directors made some "Tough Decisions". We had no choice. We either made these tough decisions, or we went bankrupt. It was that simple. Your board made the decision to make QCWA a viable entity going forward, and to financially move QCWA into the black in 2013.

The four largest expenses for QCWA (from largest to smallest) is the cost of the Journal, the General Manager's contract fee, the fee we pay our expensive MA CPA, and the editor's fee. The other expenses are small in comparison. The board chose to eliminate the first three of these as much as possible. The changes in the Journal will be addressed elsewhere, but I will discuss the others.

As you probably know, Jim LaPorta, N1CC, our present General Manager, chose not to renew his contract, which expires December 31, 2012. The board had a choice of starting a search committee, or taking other bold steps. The board chose the later. We will be using all volunteers to handle the functions that have been handled by the General Manager, thus saving the organization the second largest expense in the budget. We will be splitting the job into smaller pieces, in essence "decentralizing" the General Manager's position.

At this point, we will be dividing this position into six parts that are critical to the operation of QCWA. We are fortunate that we have identified people to handle all of these positions. They will take over by December 1, so that we can have a smooth transition. The positions and people involved are as follows:
Executive Administrator - Ken Simpson, W8EK
Executive Assistant - Sue Simpson, N8AJU
Disbursement Administrator - Roberta Cohen, WA2FRW
Certificate Custodian - Vic Culver, W4VIC
Membership Supplies Coordinator - Myron Cherry, K4YA
              Membership Renewal Coordinator - automated/Exec Admin/Exec Assist

The duties of these people will be outlined in January when the new monthly edition of the digital Journal will debut.

This also means that we will be closing the Texas headquarters and moving it to Florida. Texas will close on November 15, and Florida will open about December 1. There will be about two weeks, over the Thanksgiving holiday, when we will be in transition, while the truck moves our supplies from TX to FL.

Effective immediately, the address for QCWA is
              8400 NW 115th Avenue
              Ocala, FL 34482-1098

As this is being written, we do not yet have a QCWA phone number. Please check the web page (www.qcwa.org) for the phone number. We will also start using qcwa.org for e-mail. My e-mail address will be ExecAdmin@qcwa.org.

The third expense is for our CPA. We have had a CPA in MA that simply was not meeting our needs, especially considering the amount we were paying them. The board chose to terminate the services of this CPA. As a result, we are looking for a volunteer CPA, probably from the ranks of QCWA members. Ideally, we are looking for a retired or semi-retired CPA that is/has been licensed. At this writing, this person has not been identified. If you would like to volunteer, or possibly know someone that would fit this criteria, please contact us. We are also looking for a volunteer lawyer.

The fourth expense is that of our editor. This will be the only paid position that QCWA will have. Since we are moving from a quarterly Journal to a monthly Journal, it is only fair that this fee should increase. All of the other new established positions will serve without compensation, and will be on a volunteer basis only.

With these changes, QCWA should save enough to finally put us back into a balanced budget for 2013, or even a small surplus, which has not been realized over the past several years. If you have questions, please let me know, and we will do our best to answer.

At this time everyone placed their meal order with the waitress and we continued with the meeting while the kitchen prepared our choices.

The nominating committee presented those selected for the office of President, Les Myers, Vice President, Judy McCune, Sec-Treas. The scheduling of our quarterly meetings on the 3rd Saturday of February, May, August and November conflicts each year with the Dayton Hamfest and the Massillon Christmas Parade causing some members unable to attend. It was moved by Judy McCune and seconded by Joe Vignos that we change our Chapter 21 meetings to the 2nd Saturday of the above named months. The motion passed.

Sunshine Report:  Nelson Caley visited with members Stan and Doris Smith and reported on their health status.  Judy McCune reported that Sharon Glass had fallen and broken her foot and reported that May Rauvola was unable to attend because of her health problems.

QCWA News:  Nelson also telephoned Ken Simpson and reported on the new rearrangements taking place at QCWA HQ.

Lunches ready to serve.  Less Myers gave the prayer.

Julius conducted our 50/50 drawing.  Ed Clinger won the $7.50.

Motion to adjourn made by Dennis Moriarty. Seconded by Joe Vignos.

Dennis Morarty  presented our program.  A 1963 edition of the TV program  “Hazel” where Ham Radio was blamed for a TV interference problem.  The source of the interference was finally traced to a faulty thermostat in electric heating pad and the young Ham operator was vindicated.

MINUTES: CHAPTER 21
May 26,2012

May 26th 2012 meeting of the Canton, Ohio  QCWA  Chapter 21 was a dinner meeting held at the Flipside Grille at East Sparta Ohio.

President Les Myers KK8K greeted and welcomed all to the meeting. Members then introduced themselves and their guests.  There were 25 present, filling the room provided by the restaurant.  There were only 3 vacant chairs.  After a prayer of thanks, given by President Myers, each placed their dinner order with our efficient server.

Report then given by President on the trip to Dayton Hamfest by a trio of members, he announced that the Canton Amateur Radio Club Field Day would be held at the Frank Dearman farm.  A round of applause was given for Julius Erdos KD8XD and his wife Helen for their 65th wedding anniversary celebrated just two days earlier.  Another round of applause was given Andy Hogue W8DIR who had recently celebrated his 99th Birthday.

Treasurer Nelson Caley reported that club account has been transferred to him and the balance is $408.81. Our $25.00 Memorial Scolarship fund has yet to be sent for K8NIB Denver Frey.  The 50/50 of $12.00 was won by Karen Myers.  We then enjoyed a few minutes to visit with each other while our dinners were being prepared.  Several comments were heard on the excellence of the meals

After dinner our world travelers Mel Vye W8MV and his wife Martha gave an interesting Power Point program covering their recent trip to Burma, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and  Vietnam with photos showing beautiful gold leaf covered pagodas to the deepest of poverty, type of government, religion, currency used, exchange rate etc.

Mel and Martha Vye have again invited us to hold our August 25th meeting at noon at their lake front home on Portage Lake.

November 19, 2011

Our annual meeting was held at Gracee Anns B & K, Canal Fulton, Ohio.  Eleven  members and ten guests were present. We have three new members: Don Wade W8DEA, Roger Gray W8VE and Jerry LaRocca KF8EB.
We ordered from the menu.  President, Mel Vye W8MV welcomed everyone, and we all introduced ourselves.  After everyone had finished their meals, Mel W8MV called the meeting to order.  Judy McCune N8AIM gave the Treasurer’s report.

After the Treasurer’s report, Mel spoke about our elections.  Les Myers, KK8K will become president, but we need a Vice President.  Mel asked if anyone would take on that job, but there were no volunteers.    Judy McCune N8AIM will continue as Secretary-Treasurer, Julius Erdos KD8XD and Dennis Moriarty KA8AGB will continue as  Trustees and Joe Vignos W1FEZ will continue as editor and Web Master.

A motion was made by Nelson Caley W8EAR to send a $25.00 donation to the QCWA Scholarship fund in memory of Denny Frey K8NIB.  Motion was seconded by Denny Moriarity K8AGB and passed.

Dues ($5.00) were collected from those in attendance who hadn’t paid earlier.

Les KK8K presented a program that he had found an old radio episode of Sherlock Holmes that included radios being used to pass information beyond the boarders of England.  It was enjoyed by all.

Our next quarterly meeting will be held at noon on a Saturday in February 2011.

 Respectfully Submitted,

Judy McCune N8AIM

August 20, 2011

Our August meeting was held at the home of Mel Vye W8MV with 5 members and 6 guests attending.  After having a delicious lunch, Mel took us on a boat ride around the Portage Lakes while we relaxed and enjoyed the scenery.

When we returned, Mel demonstrated the "Weak Signal Propagation Reporting (WSPR) system" developed by Joe Taylor, K1JT and as described in the November 2010 issue of QST.  This system uses four FSK tones in a bandwidth of 6 Hz and a baud rate of 1.46 bps.  This very narrow bandwidth signals to be decoded with a S/N ratio < 25 db.  As an example, Mel was able to decode a 5 W signal from Western Australia on 160 m.

Due to the time that had past, and the small turnout we did not have a formal meeting.  All who went enjoyed themselves.

 Respectfully Submitted,

Judy McCune N8AIM

QCWA CHAPTER 21 NET

Net became dormant im Spring of 2005.  Lack of interest, timing of net on Thursday evening and lack of activity of 145.11 repeater have been cited for the demise. Attempts to start Net up again have been futile!  Any suggestions would be highly appreciated. Contact one of the Chapter officers or directors.
